The Characteristic of Pelton and Turgo Turbine Performance and Their Impact on Pico- Hydro Electricity

Abstract—In the recent years, Pico hydroelectricity has greatly developed and its technology is now being integrated into an off-grid more so in the rural regions which do not have access to electricity. There are some countries that are facing the challenge of supplying enough electricity to the rural areas. However, due to the introduction of the Pico hydro stations which are lower prices, electricity can be availed to the people in the rural areas. Hydro power is among the most recommended as well as efficient source of renewable energy that is being utilized by many countries across the globe. The pelton wheel and Turgo turbine are both termed as an impulse turbine and they can be applied in the pico-hydro systems because possess high efficiency in diverse conditions. This paper is about a laboratory experiment designed to measure the operational performance characteristic of both pelton and Turgo turbines. The results from the experiment indicated that under the best working conditions the Turgo turbine showed to be more than 80 percent efficiency with a speed ratio of about 0.46 which is recommended for Pico hydro installations. The results also showed that there was lower peak efficiency of both Turgo and pelton turbines in the experiments as compared to the theoretical speed rations that are ideal. This is because of the inefficiencies in the turbine that causes a decrease in the speed rations.
