Study on the Thermal Image with the Defect Detection Using Ultrasonic

Abstract—The purpose of this study was to confirm the soundness of parts and materials considering the productivity and quality of Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technology by overcoming the limitations of this technology. For this purpose, thermal conversion technology based on ultrasonic energy was combined with infrared thermography to develop a hybrid NDT system. Thermal conversion technology was based on the control variables of ultrasonic excitation time (or frequency), ultrasonic intensity and the design of ultrasonic horns. Accordingly, optimum values were determined and an ultrasonic excitation controller with two control variables—ultrasonic excitation time (or frequency) and ultrasonic intensity—was developed. This controller can be applied to various objects, regardless of their size and thickness. In other words, if blinking is detected for an object with a defect, it should be tested again by infrared thermography. This is the core technology proposed in the present study. With regard to the inspection process of parts and materials in many industries, existing poor working conditions and environmental friendliness should be improved and productivity should be increased.
